Heirs Holdings acquires Seplat Energy
Heirs Holdings, led by Nigerian entrepreneur Tony Elumelu, has agreed to acquire a 20% stake in Seplat Energy for $496 million. The transaction underlines Elumelu's ambition to reinforce his company's position in Nigeria's upstream oil sector, a crucial market within Africa's largest oil-exporting nation. The stake is being purchased from France's Etablissements Maurel & Prom, a move that sent Seplat’s shares up by 11% in London and Maurel & Prom's by 8% in Paris.
The acquisition involves an immediate payment of $248 million, with the remaining amount to be settled within 30 days. This financial commitment is partly supported by the African Export-Import Bank and the Africa Finance Corporation. Heirs Holdings views this investment as part of its broader strategy to control and develop Africa's energy resources as articulated by Elumelu, who founded the firm in 2010.
For Seplat Energy, the acquisition complements its previous expansions, including last year's purchase of Exxon Mobil’s local onshore oil and gas assets. Heirs Holdings, in turn, solidifies its footprint in the sector following its acquisition of Shell's assets in 2021. This transaction bolsters both companies amidst broader challenges facing Nigeria’s oil industry, where security issues, exemplified by ongoing theft and sabotage, continue to impact production.
Despite these challenges, the investment aligns with President Bola Tinubu's ongoing efforts to enhance security within Nigeria's oil-rich regions. This development suggests strategic efforts are underway to safeguard and stimulate production outputs in these volatile areas.
Looking forward, the completion of this acquisition depends on meeting standard regulatory approvals and finalizing the outstanding financial arrangements. The strategic support from major African financial institutions could signal future collaborative ventures aimed at optimizing Nigeria's energy potential, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in the region's oil and gas sector.
