Xona Space Systems Inc. has secured $170 million in a Series C funding round to advance its efforts in developing a satellite navigation system that aims to overcome the limitations of GPS technology. The round was spearheaded by Mohari Ventures Natural Capital, with participation from Samsung Next, ICONIQ, and other institutional investors.

Xona is constructing a satellite system dubbed Pulsar, designed to work in environments where traditional GPS systems falter, such as indoor settings obstructed by walls. The Pulsar constellation relies on isoflux antennas to deliver what the company claims to be the world's strongest navigation signal. This signal is capable of penetrating obstructions like walls and tree cover, thus extending navigational capabilities beyond conventional constraints. Additionally, Pulsar's satellites boast enhanced resistance to interference and are driven by a 3,400-watt solar panel array that powers both the navigation signal and the orbital maneuvering system.

The innovation of Xona's technology lies in its distributed clock architecture which negates the necessity for complex atomic clocks traditionally used in GPS systems. The company's approach involves time measurements comparison amongst multiple Pulsar satellites, resulting in a claimed accuracy of within 10 nanoseconds. This novel method facilitates compatibility with current devices through potential software updates, as pointed out by Brian Manning, Xona's co-founder and Chief Executive, who mentioned that more than a dozen commercial partners are already integrating Pulsar into their devices.

The funding will be allocated toward scaling operations at Xona’s satellite plant in Burlingame, California, with the aim to launch a network of 258 satellites by the end of 2026. The move places Xona in direct competition with traditional GPS solutions, offering industry players an alternative that potentially broadens the scope of satellite navigation applications.

Looking ahead, the deployment of the Pulsar constellation is set to challenge GPS's dominance, contingent on overcoming technical and regulatory hurdles. Key milestones include securing regulatory approvals for satellite launches and completing development phases on schedule. The satellite navigation market’s competitive dynamics may shift, with Xona's technology promising enhanced functionality and accessibility to currently underserved regions and use cases.
