Mindgard Ltd. raises $30M in Series A
Mindgard Ltd., an AI cybersecurity firm, has secured $30 million in a Series A funding round led by Album VC, with participation from Karma Ventures, .406 Ventures, Atlantic Bridge, IQ Capital, and Lakestar. The investment aims to meet the growing demand for AI security solutions as industries increasingly deploy AI models and applications, introducing new vulnerabilities.
The funding round will enable Mindgard to expand its engineering team and enhance its product, sales, and marketing functions. This financial infusion comes as the company looks to strengthen its AI Security Platform, which focuses on countering security threats inherent in AI systems. Prior to its establishment as an independent company in 2022, Mindgard was a spinout from Lancaster University, capitalizing on over a decade of AI security research. Currently, it operates from headquarters in Boston and London.
Mindgard’s approach combines AI security research with offensive security expertise. The company has identified over 150 significant vulnerabilities in popular AI applications, highlighting the magnitude of the threat landscape. Its portfolio of disclosed vulnerabilities includes issues such as zero-day code executions in AnySphere Inc.'s Cursor and guardrail failures in OpenAI’s ChatGPT, underscoring the need for comprehensive security measures. CEO James Brear emphasizes the necessity of operationalizing expert knowledge to develop capabilities that enterprises require to protect their AI assets.
The investment positions Mindgard favorably amid a backdrop where AI is increasingly integrated into critical operational frameworks across various sectors, including financial services and healthcare. As AI systems proliferate, traditional security infrastructure is often ill-equipped to manage the novel threats these technologies pose. Ty Boswell of Album VC stresses that building specialized security solutions for AI frameworks is crucial as organizations expand AI implementations in crucial areas.
Looking forward, Mindgard plans to accelerate deployments across a range of Fortune 2000 companies and AI innovators. This expansion will test the company’s capability to deliver scaled security solutions in a complex and evolving threat environment. As AI adoption accelerates, regulatory frameworks and industry norms concerning AI security remain points of ongoing development and interest.
