Varun Beverages acquires Twizza
Varun Beverages Ltd., a major bottling partner for PepsiCo, has successfully acquired South Africa’s Twizza in a transaction valued at $125 million. This acquisition marks a significant step in Varun's strategic expansion across Africa's rapidly growing soft drink market. The Indian conglomerate, led by billionaire Ravi Jaipuria, aims to leverage Twizza's established production and distribution capabilities in Southern Africa.
The acquisition encompasses Twizza's manufacturing facilities located in Cape Town, Middelburg, and Komani, as well as its substantial distribution network across the region. Varun's South African subsidiary, The Beverage Company (BevCo), will now operate Twizza, with the transition following necessary regulatory approvals from South Africa, Botswana, and Eswatini. Ken Clark, Twizza’s founder, and his family have fully relinquished their ownership stakes, marking the end of Twizza's independent operations.
For Varun Beverages, which is endeavoring to counteract slowing Indian sales impacted by adverse weather, the move into Africa—an increasingly vital market for international growth—holds strategic significance. Twizza, known for its affordable soft drinks and national recognition in South Africa, provides Varun with a robust platform to diversify its product offerings and enhance distribution reach. The integration of Twizza into Varun's existing African operations, spanning Morocco, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, is expected to bolster revenue growth and improve margins.
Twizza, founded in 2003 by Ken Clark, has carved a niche in the non-alcoholic beverage sector with a wide range of products, including carbonated and energy drinks. Reporting revenue of approximately R1.689 billion ($113 million) for the fiscal year ending June 2025, the company also demonstrated notable scale with sales volumes of 71 million cases. The acquisition positions Varun to capitalize on Twizza's established market presence and competitive pricing model amidst a dynamic South African beverage industry.
Looking forward, Varun Beverages will focus on leveraging Twizza’s operational assets to enhance its consumer base and drive growth in Southern Africa. The transaction's closure follows the initial deal announcement in December 2025, with Varun obtaining all requisite regulatory clearances by the anticipated timeline of June 2026. As Varun integrates Twizza into its wider portfolio, further expansion opportunities and operational synergies are likely to emerge, potentially prompting additional consolidation moves within Africa's beverage sector.
