VAROPreem Sverige AB acquires SunPine
VAROPreem Sverige AB has entered an agreement to acquire all outstanding shares in Sunpine, the world’s largest producer of Raw Tall Diesel, from current stakeholders Sveaskogs Förvaltning AB, Södra Skogsägarna ekonomisk förening, and Lawter Europe BV. Though financial terms remain undisclosed, the acquisition enhances VAROPreem's strategic position in the European market for fossil-free transport fuels. This move underscores the companies’ alignment on advancing sustainability within the energy sector.
The acquisition will see VAROPreem integrate Sunpine's operations into its existing structure, capitalizing on Sunpine's expertise in producing Raw Tall Diesel. This biofuel feedstock, derived from the pulp and paper industry by-products, is further refined into renewable diesel formats like HVO. VAROPreem is noted as Europe's second-largest and the world’s sixth-largest producer of renewable transport fuels, offering a complementary fit with Sunpine’s capabilities.
Commenting on the deal, Sunpine CEO David Öquist highlighted the long-term objectives shared by both entities to increase the share of renewable fuels in the transport sector. Martin Forsén, Chairman of Sunpine, noted that this acquisition positions Sunpine to continue its trajectory of sustainable growth with the backing of VAROPreem, particularly as demand for fossil-free energy solutions intensifies across Europe.
Within the broader market context, this acquisition reflects a growing consolidation trend in the renewable fuels sector as companies seek to expand their capabilities and align with global decarbonization mandates. For VAROPreem, acquiring Sunpine not only shores up its biofuel supply chain but also strengthens its competitive stance amid heightened interest in fossil-free energy sources across the continent.
Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, with expectations set for finalization in the first half of 2026. As the two companies prepare for integration, the deal marks a significant milestone in their collective efforts to fuel the transition towards sustainable transport solutions.
