York Space Systems acquires Solestial

York Space Systems has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Solestial, a manufacturer of space solar cells, marking its third such acquisition in 2023. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed. This strategic move comes as York continues to expand its capabilities in the space sector, having previously acquired Orbion Space Technology and planning the acquisition of All.Space, with the goal of optimizing its supply chain and preparing for further market growth.

Based in Arizona, Solestial specializes in producing ultra-thin, radiation-hardened silicon solar cells, with 95% of its materials sourced domestically. These solar cells are critical components in the construction of satellites and have seen increased demand due to a significant rise in satellite launches. York aims to mitigate the supply chain risks associated with these components, which are both costly and often subject to lengthy lead times exceeding two years.

Solestial will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary following the acquisition, expected to close in the second quarter of the year. By integrating Solestial's technology, York intends to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of its satellite offerings. Margo de Naray, CEO of Solestial, emphasized the company's mission to address the space power bottleneck, providing scalable solutions that can perform reliably in space.

This acquisition underscores York's strategy to vertically integrate its operations by leveraging domestic manufacturing capabilities. The addition of Solestial could give York a competitive edge in the commercial and defense space markets, which are becoming increasingly competitive as new players enter and established companies enhance their offerings.
