Saronic Technologies Inc. raises $1.75B in Series D
Saronic Technologies Inc., a player in the autonomous shipbuilding sector, has secured $1.75 billion in Series D funding with a substantial $9.25 billion valuation. This late-stage financing round, led by veteran venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, underscores the market's backing for Saronic's ambition to scale its production of unmanned vessels for defense and commercial applications.
Founded in 2022, Saronic Technologies aims to tackle inefficiencies in traditional shipbuilding which often involves high costs, slow production times, and limited scalability. The company's autonomous ships leverage software-defined systems and vertically integrated manufacturing processes. These designs enable the vessels to operate with full autonomy, managed through onboard systems that integrate sensors and navigation controls, thereby reducing the need for human crews. The technology extends to capabilities such as mission planning, fleet coordination, and remote supervision, offering solutions for surveillance, patrol operations, and data collection.
Saronic's funding round attracted a diverse group of investors, including Advent International, Andreessen Horowitz, and Bessemer Venture Partners, among others. The capital will further the development of Saronic’s Port Alpha, an innovative shipyard intended to bolster its production capacity. The company's rapid expansion is exemplified by the introduction of its 180-foot autonomous vessel, the Marauder, developed in under eight months and complemented by a robust $392 million contract with the U.S. Navy.
The investment comes at a pivotal moment for the U.S. maritime industry, which has faced challenges in maintaining its shipbuilding capabilities. Co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas affirmed that Saronic aims to revitalize this sector through pioneering engineering and manufacturing practices. Ilya Fushman of Kleiner Perkins emphasized the strategic importance of Saronic's dual focus on cutting-edge ship technologies and its parallel investment in production infrastructure—a combination rarely seen in the industry.
Looking ahead, Saronic’s expansion efforts could reshape the competitive landscape of autonomous maritime technology, potentially prompting shifts in capital allocation within the sector. The company’s rapid advances in both technology and production capacity suggest it may soon play a critical role in the evolution of naval and commercial shipping industries.
