Overtone raises $18M
Overtone, an AI-driven matchmaking service founded by Justin McLeod, has secured $18 million in funding from investors including FirstMark Capital, Pace Capital, and Match Group. The fundraising round comes as McLeod, the former founder of Hinge, shifts his focus to this new venture. With Overtone, McLeod aims to distinguish itself from traditional dating apps by providing meaningful introductions without relying on user profiles, swipes, and likes.
The funding will support Overtone as it prepares for a limited launch later this year. The platform's investors are notably significant, with Match Group, owner of numerous dating apps including Hinge, involved in the financing and joining Overtone's board. In addition to Match Group, the board will include Diana Chapman, an executive leadership adviser and founder of The Signal Institute, and renowned relationship psychotherapist Esther Perel.
McLeod describes Overtone as a departure from the typical dating app experience. The service intends to focus on quality introductions rather than volume, leveraging relationship science to offer a curated matchmaking approach. McLeod argues the current dating app model reduces users to mere statistics, and his solution is to apply technology to enhance rather than dilute the tradition of matchmaking.
As AI-based matchmaking gains traction, Overtone enters a market that is simultaneously intrigued and cautious about the technology's role in personal relationships. Competitors are also attempting to integrate AI; for instance, Bumble's recent foray into algorithm-based matchmaking met with mixed reactions. Overtone, by contrast, seeks to emphasize the incorporation of AI in a personalized context.
Looking ahead, the timing of Overtone's launch and the market's reception to its approach will be crucial. As the matchmaking service rolls out in select locations later this year, industry observers will monitor how it navigates the balance between human intuition and AI capabilities in an evolving dating landscape.
