Akamai Technologies acquires LayerX
Akamai Technologies, the cloud computing and content delivery network provider, has announced its acquisition of LayerX, a firm specializing in artificial intelligence and browser security, for approximately $205 million in an all-cash transaction. The acquisition, disclosed on Thursday, adds strategic capabilities to Akamai's existing portfolio, particularly in enhancing its Zero Trust and application security offerings with advanced AI usage control functions.
LayerX, which has garnered approximately $45 million in funding since its inception, offers security solutions that provide real-time visibility and control over activities on web browsers, applications, and integrated development environments. Its platform addresses AI-related threats through features such as shadow AI discovery, generative AI data loss prevention, and misuses detection. Traditional browser security needs are also covered, including extension management and safe browsing capabilities. The move to bring LayerX’s technology in-house will bolster Akamai's security solutions particularly as demand for comprehensive security measures heightens in the face of increasing AI integration.
The integration of LayerX is poised to strengthen Akamai's stance in the AI and cybersecurity sectors. As part of the deal, LayerX’s co-founders and employees will transition into Akamai’s Zero Trust organization. The acquisition is projected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions, and LayerX will initially retain its brand identity before fully merging under the Akamai banner. Despite the strategic value, Akamai anticipates that the acquisition will dilute its non-GAAP earnings per share by around $0.12 in fiscal 2026. However, the aim is to enhance long-term growth prospects, particularly as LayerX's business is anticipated to achieve approximately $10 million in annual recurring revenue by year-end.
This acquisition marks Akamai's second foray into expanding its technological reach within the last year, following its purchase of Fermyon, a serverless computing company, in December 2025. It reflects a broader trend within the cybersecurity M&A landscape, with more than 150 acquisitions recorded in recent times, as companies increasingly seek to fortify their positions within the growing AI and security markets.
Going forward, Akamai will focus on integrating LayerX's solutions and personnel into its current operations while navigating any regulatory requirements arising from the acquisition. The consolidation of LayerX's innovative security technologies is expected to enhance Akamai's ability to offer robust, next-generation cybersecurity solutions amidst the accelerating adoption of AI-driven applications.
