WVU Medicine acquires Independence Health System
West Virginia University Health System (WVU Health System) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Independence Health System in a transaction valued at $800 million. The acquisition will see WVU Health System incorporate five Pennsylvania-based hospitals into its network and reflects an effort to bolster healthcare infrastructure and service provision in the region.
The hospitals involved—Butler Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, Frick Hospital, Latrobe Hospital, and Westmoreland Hospital—will transition to operating under the WVU Medicine brand by the fall. The deal includes a substantial investment aimed at enhancing these facilities' capabilities via new electronic medical records, as well as upgrades and expansions to their physical and clinical capacity. These developments are intended to increase care accessibility and enhance service offerings for patients throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of WVU Health System, noted the significance of bringing Independence Health System into the WVU network. Wright emphasized the commitment to maintaining and expanding healthcare access close to home. He highlighted opportunities for enhanced clinical collaboration, recruitment, research, education, and access to specialty care, underlining the ambition to ensure the hospitals' viability for future generations.
Independence Health System’s CEO, Ken DeFurio, underscored the acquisition's strategic rationale, noting that the alliance secures a more robust future for both patients and caregivers while maintaining local access to care. The transaction aims to leverage scale and combined clinical capabilities to enhance healthcare provision and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
This acquisition positions WVU Health System to expand its existing network, which spans across West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio. By integrating Independence Health System into its portfolio, WVU Health System aims to extend expert care to rural and underserved communities. Additionally, the partnership will support coordinated population health strategies through Peak Health, its affiliated health insurance entity.
The transaction is expected to close in late September or early October 2026 following final regulatory approvals. This will mark a significant expansion step for WVU Health System within the regional healthcare landscape.
