Leonardo acquires IDV
Leonardo has finalized the acquisition of Iveco Group’s Defence Business, including the IDV and ASTRA brands, for €1.6 billion. This deal aligns with the previously communicated enterprise value of €1.7 billion, minus contractual adjustments, and was funded entirely from Leonardo’s available cash reserves.
The acquisition is a strategic move by Leonardo to bolster its position in the land defence sector, expanding its range of offerings as a fully integrated Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). This transaction enhances Leonardo's capabilities to deliver comprehensive solutions in defence and security, specifically in both tracked and wheeled land platforms.
According to Roberto Cingolani, CEO and General Manager of Leonardo, the acquisition fortifies the company's status as a leading player in the land defence market, which he asserts has promising long-term growth potential. It complements Leonardo’s existing capabilities by adding the industrial capacity to deliver fully integrated mobility and payload solutions, further supporting the company's inorganic growth strategy as part of its Industrial Plan.
The integration of Iveco’s defence business is poised to create commercial synergies by leveraging the complementary nature of both companies’ sales networks and product offerings. Leonardo's expertise in advanced electronics, such as command-and-control systems and next-generation turrets, in cooperation with IDV's robust vehicle platform, is expected to result in high-performance operational solutions. This synergy is anticipated to cultivate new technological advancements and enhance professional skills within the combined entities.
As the defence sector evolves, this acquisition places Leonardo in a strong position relative to its competitors, enabling it to offer a broader range of integrated solutions in markets with considerable growth potential. The strategic alignment of capabilities in both entities aims to drive technological development while optimizing operational efficiencies. The completion of the acquisition marks a significant milestone in Leonardo's trajectory towards a more diversified and robust market standing, with any remaining regulatory issues and integration processes to be addressed in the upcoming business cycles.
