Last Mile acquires GreenFruit Avocados
Last Mile, a newly established holding company, has acquired GreenFruit Avocados, a California-based supplier specializing in the ripening, cold storage, and distribution of avocados. The acquisition by Last Mile, backed by seasoned industry experts and supported by an investment fund from New York's Ospraie Management, LLC, signals a new phase for the avocado supply chain in the region. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The consortium behind Last Mile comprises Scott Bauwens and Jamie Johnson from Simpatica, one of the major avocado producers in California, Jim Donovan, formerly of Mission Produce, and Tahuaycani, a Spanish investment entity engaged with one of Peru's largest avocado growers, ACP Agro. This group has acquired full ownership of GreenFruit Avocados. Under the new structure, Bauwens will transition from his CEO role at Simpatica to become CEO of GreenFruit, while Donovan will take on the position of Executive Chairman. Brian Gomez, previously one of GreenFruit's owners, is appointed as President of Sales. The company will maintain its headquarters in Orange County, California, while broadening its supply operations across South America, as well as into Mexico and Europe.
The strategic impetus behind the acquisition lies in leveraging GreenFruit's established distribution and operational infrastructure to create a vertically integrated avocado enterprise. The partners aim to harness Tahuaycani's ties with ACP Agro to secure a stable, year-round supply chain, and utilize Simpatica's extensive California groves to bolster domestic production. The integration offers significant advantages in controlling supply chain logistics, which is expected to enhance customer and grower relationships, according to Donovan and Bauwens.
For the broader market, this acquisition represents a consolidation trend among avocado suppliers aiming to achieve vertical integration. By securing comprehensive control over the supply chain, Last Mile bolsters its competitive edge in dealing with retailers and distributors who prioritize depth and reliability in supply. This move could prompt similar consolidation efforts among other market players seeking to enhance operational efficiency and supply chain management.
Looking ahead, the success of Last Mile's venture will depend on its ability to synchronize and optimize its expanded operations across diverse geographical locations. While the acquisition is complete, its impact will largely be observed in how effectively the group can translate its vertical integration strategy into market performance and customer satisfaction.
