CMA CGM Global Business Services (India acquires Freightliner Ltd
The CMA CGM Group has completed the acquisition of Freightliner Ltd, a significant development in the intermodal logistics sector. This acquisition, the terms of which remain undisclosed, positions CMA CGM to strengthen its logistics capabilities in the United Kingdom, highlighting its strategic focus on integrating maritime and rail freight solutions. Freightliner, known as the UK's leading intermodal rail freight operator, will now leverage the resources of CMA CGM's global network.
The acquisition involves Freightliner's substantial assets, including 10 terminals, approximately 1.4 million rail slots, and 2,000 wagons, as well as a significant fleet of electric locomotives. Despite the change in ownership, Freightliner will maintain its operations independently, providing services to multiple customers and focusing on sustainable logistics. Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director at Freightliner, emphasized the acquisition's potential to enhance Freightliner's service offerings by utilizing CMA CGM's expansive global logistics framework.
The integration allows Freightliner to combine its localized rail expertise with CMA CGM's international maritime reach. This strategic move is expected to foster a more resilient supply chain for Freightliner's customers, enhancing service delivery while continuing to reduce carbon emissions through its sustainable intermodal network. Notably, sections of The Freightliner Group, including Heavy Haul Rail and the European entities Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner PL and DE, will not be part of this acquisition and will continue to operate independently under the existing ownership.
In the broader market context, CMA CGM reinforces its stature in the UK's logistics landscape. The group already manages extensive operations across the UK with 7,200 employees and numerous services connecting the region worldwide. For the first half of 2025, CMA CGM transported 200,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by rail and road, underscoring its commitment to decarbonized logistics. This acquisition of Freightliner is a further testament to CMA CGM's pursuit of sustainable and integrated logistics solutions.
Going forward, the market will be watching how Freightliner's integration into CMA CGM's operations unfolds, particularly regarding synergies between rail and maritime logistics. The acquisition also raises questions on how competitors will respond as CMA CGM consolidates its position in the intermodal sector. While no regulatory hurdles have been disclosed, the focus will likely be on operational integration and maintaining service continuity for Freightliner's existing customer base.
