Drax Group acquires Flexitricity

Drax, the UK renewable energy company, has announced the acquisition of Flexitricity for £36 million from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners. The deal, which focuses on Flexitricity's energy optimization capabilities, aims to bolster Drax's strategic ambitions in battery energy storage and energy security.

The acquisition is set to complete in the first quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Flexitricity, known for optimizing flexible energy assets, brings a scalable platform that Drax expects will deliver returns significantly above its current weighted average cost of capital. This positions Drax to expand its battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio, incorporating physical assets and optimizing third-party sites.

Will Gardiner, Drax's Chief Executive, highlighted the strategic alignment, noting that Flexitricity's AI-driven technology and machine learning software will enhance Drax's FlexGen business. The integration of these capabilities is intended to support Drax's plans to develop a gigawatt-scale pipeline of BESS projects, reinforcing energy security and expanding services offered to its customers.
