Community Transit merges with Everett Transit
Community Transit is set to merge with Everett Transit, adopting a unified network aimed at better addressing the region's transit needs as Everett experiences rapid population growth. This consolidation is expected to enhance service integration and improve connections to Link light rail services, particularly into future stations in Everett and existing ones in Lynnwood.
Although financial terms of the merger were not disclosed, officials from both services indicated the framework involves drafting an interlocal agreement. This agreement will outline the annexation of Everett Transit into Community Transit’s service district. The proposal is scheduled for review by the Everett City Council and Community Transit Board of Directors in the coming fall. The anticipated changes include more frequent buses and streamlined routes, reducing the need for inconvenient transfers for commuters.
This move is strategically designed to bolster the local transit infrastructure in synchronization with Sound Transit’s expansion plans. Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin emphasized that the merger would ensure Everett’s readiness to support future regional transportation needs, enhancing ease of travel both within the city and across Snohomish County. More frequent services are expected to facilitate smoother travel for existing riders while attracting new ones.
As the light rail project progresses, the merger is seen as a critical step toward creating a cohesive regional transit system. Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers hailed the merger as a forward-thinking initiative that will benefit residents in commuting, education, and recreational pursuits throughout the county. The integration is supported by a 2022-2023 "More Transit Together" study, which identified consolidation as a key driver for enhanced transit service.
Looking ahead, if the agreement gains approval, a reconfigured Community Transit Board will oversee the implementation of the new network. This will include public engagement activities and planning for expanded transit offerings such as microtransit and paratransit services, along with a unified fare system. The service changes will be deployed incrementally, stabilizing existing routes during the transition to prevent service disruption. The undertaking remains aligned with regional transportation objectives as Everett continues to advance its infrastructure to support continued growth.
