BlueRidge Life Sciences acquires Design Science
BlueRidge Life Sciences has acquired Design Science Group, enhancing its capabilities in human factors engineering. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, sees the Houston-based life sciences consulting firm incorporating the expertise of Philadelphia-based Design Science into its operations. The acquisition underscores the growing significance of human factors engineering in medical device development and regulatory compliance.
Design Science, established in 1991, specializes in usability testing, human factors engineering, and risk analysis for complex medical and combination products. The firm’s strategic locations include usability labs in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Munich, with a team comprising over 50 engineers, designers, and psychologists. This acquisition will allow BlueRidge to integrate these competencies into its existing service offerings, which include commercialization, clinical development, and regulatory strategy.
Ian Kelly, CEO of BlueRidge Life Sciences, emphasized that the inclusion of Design Science enhances their ability to deliver comprehensive solutions in the life sciences sector. "Human factors and usability engineering are increasingly critical to regulatory success, patient safety, and commercial adoption," Kelly stated, noting that Design Science's scientific approach and strong culture will complement BlueRidge's current capabilities.
For BlueRidge, which is backed by private equity firm Renovus Capital Partners, the acquisition diversifies its service portfolio in device and combination products, safety in consumer products, and pharmaceutical commercialization. Design Science's capabilities will potentially strengthen BlueRidge's competitive position as the demand for integrated human factors expertise grows in the life sciences industry.
As BlueRidge retains its branding, Design Science's CEO, Katie Hansbro, and her leadership team will continue to drive their operations. Hansbro expressed enthusiasm about the merger, highlighting the opportunity to offer more comprehensive solutions to innovators in the life sciences field. Looking ahead, BlueRidge will likely focus on melding the two teams' expertise to enhance its market offerings, while the industry watches for any further consolidation or strategic alliances in the specialized field of human factors engineering.
