Motorola Solutions has signed an agreement to acquire D-Fend Solutions, an Israeli company specializing in counter-drone technologies, for $1.5 billion. This acquisition allows Motorola to enhance its capabilities in the defense and technology sectors, capitalizing on recent legislative changes under the Safer Skies Act. This act, part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, has opened opportunities for local law enforcement to counter drone threats, a move previously restricted to federal authorities.

D-Fend, which provides non-kinetic counter-drone systems across 30 countries, projects revenues of approximately $185 million by 2026. Its innovative technologies use cyber-centric methods to detect and commandeer rogue drones by manipulating their radio frequencies rather than destroying them outright. This approach is beneficial in sensitive environments such as airports or populous urban areas, where traditional methods could pose risks.

Motorola's strategic move reflects a growing need for advanced drone mitigation solutions as drone-related risks proliferate in modern airspace. Greg Brown, Chairman and CEO of Motorola, highlighted the immediate need for investment in technologies that go beyond mere detection to safely manage drone threats. The addition of D-Fend's systems will bolster Motorola's portfolio in public safety and security, enabling it to provide more comprehensive solutions across various sectors, including federal and enterprise markets.

The acquisition places Motorola at the forefront of a deregulated domestic airspace market, increasingly defined by drone technologies and their countermeasures. With more companies looking to expand their capabilities in this domain, Motorola aims to leverage its customer relationships and expertise to drive significant impact.

The transaction is expected to close by the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. This timeframe provides Motorola ample opportunity to integrate D-Fend’s operations while aligning them with its broader strategic goals. As the deal progresses, attention will focus on how effectively Motorola can augment its existing technologies and capitalize on emerging opportunities in drone defense.
