Canyon Home Care and Hospice acquires Columbine Health Systems

Canyon Home Care & Hospice has acquired Columbine Poudre Home Care and its affiliate Bloom at Home, further extending its presence in northern Colorado. The acquisition enhances Canyon's operational capabilities in the region, though the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed. The transaction allows Canyon to integrate Columbine’s medical and non-medical home care, hospice, infusion services, and medical equipment offerings into its existing portfolio. Columbine employees have been offered positions with Canyon, ensuring continuity of care and service.

Founded seven years ago, Canyon Home Care & Hospice provides a comprehensive range of services including skilled nursing, various therapies, cardiac and pulmonary care, neurorehabilitation, wound care, disease management, and durable medical equipment. By incorporating Columbine's operations, Canyon aims to further consolidate its service offerings, particularly fortifying its hospice care provision across a host of Colorado communities such as Fort Collins, Loveland, Denver, and others.

The strategic rationale behind the acquisition hinges on the alignment of practices, ethics, and values between Canyon and Columbine, as highlighted by Rae Roberts, an administrator at Canyon. This synergy is expected to streamline administration and bolster support resources throughout the expanded operational network. Holly Johnson, former Columbine administrator, emphasized the expanded continuum of care that the combined entity will now offer, marking an evolution rather than a conclusion for Columbine’s legacy in the region.

This acquisition takes place against a backdrop of demographic shifts in Colorado, where the population aged 65 and older is growing significantly. In 2025, this demographic accounted for 17% of the state's residents, and projections suggest it will reach 21% by 2050. The increasing demand for home care and hospice services is further highlighted by the 19,700 Medicare decedents who opted for hospice in the state in 2024, underscoring opportunities for growth within the home care sector.

Looking ahead, the focus for Canyon will be on seamlessly integrating Columbine's operations to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for senior care services. While no major regulatory hurdles are anticipated, successful integration will be key. The focus will likely be on maintaining service quality and expanding their market share as demographic trends continue to drive demand in the region.
