Expedia Group acquires CarTrawler

Expedia Group has announced a definitive agreement to acquire CarTrawler for $350 million, extending its B2B travel platform capabilities in the mobility sector. The acquisition signifies Expedia's continued push to diversify beyond traditional lodging and activities, bringing increased focus to car rentals, ground transportation, and Insurtech services. With this transaction, Expedia aims to bolster its B2B strength and provide a more integrated service offering to its global network of travel partners.

CarTrawler, headquartered in Dublin, operates a B2B platform that links over 550 car rental and 500 mobility suppliers with more than 300 travel brands, including airlines such as Ryanair and American Airlines. This integration will allow Expedia to leverage CarTrawler’s specialized platform and existing supply relationships, combining them with its own extensive technology infrastructure and distribution network.

The strategic rationale for the acquisition is centered on expanding Expedia's access to ancillary travel services, thereby enhancing its value proposition for both partners and customers. By combining forces, the firms foresee increased opportunities for growth, offering supply partners broader access to global demand and providing B2B partners with a more comprehensive suite of car rental and transport options. Additionally, travelers booking through Expedia’s channels or its B2B partners will gain from an expanded selection of transportation and insurance offerings.

This acquisition is part of Expedia Group's broader B2B expansion efforts, following its previous acquisition of Tiqets to fortify its activities offerings.
