Department of the Interior merges with Bureau of Ocean Energy Management

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is set to merge its Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) with the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) to create the Marine Minerals Administration (MMA). The initiative aims to enhance coordination and efficiency in managing offshore resource activities, including leasing, permitting, inspections, and environmental oversight. This integration seeks to streamline operations while maintaining existing safety standards and regulatory protections.

The newly formed MMA will consolidate the functions of both agencies under a unified structure. This reorganization is intended to reduce operational duplication and improve decision-making across the lifecycle of offshore development. It's a strategic move to modernize resource management amid evolving energy demands. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum emphasized the administration's commitment to efficient governance, tying the restructuring to the broader objective of meeting the nation's current and future energy needs.
