BoolSi Inc. raises $6M in Seed

BoolSi Inc., a chip-design startup focused on transforming ordinary software code into custom hardware, has secured $6 million in seed funding. The round was led by Fine Structure Ventures, with additional backing from Pillar VC, Fifth Quarter Ventures, and Coalition Ventures. This capital injection will support BoolSi's development of a compiler that simplifies the traditionally complex and time-consuming world of chip design, allowing software engineers to create custom circuits without years of digital-logic training.

Under the leadership of Co-founder and Chief Executive Mihailo Isakov, BoolSi targets the field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are praised for their flexibility in hardware reconfiguration post-manufacturing. The startup's key innovation lies in its compiler, which can translate a program written in high-level languages like C or C++ into a custom circuit within minutes — a process that typically requires months of meticulous manual labor. The company's approach leverages machine learning models to generate digital circuits from software applications, using a method that ensures precision and efficiency by creating exactly labeled training examples through internal simulation.

BoolSi is initially focusing its efforts on the domain of embedded systems in robotics, addressing computationally intensive tasks such as motor control, sensor fusion, and model-predictive control — all areas known to strain general-purpose processors. The company plans to launch a private beta in the third quarter, allowing developers to begin integrating their solutions with FPGAs immediately, while also aiming to extend its capabilities to application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) as the technology matures and workloads become more standardized.

In a sector where existing high-level synthesis tools like Vivado HLS, Catapult, and Bambu primarily serve hardware engineers, BoolSi seeks to democratize chip design by making it accessible to software developers. The startup presents a compelling case through benchmarks, claiming its technology can execute certain tasks, like scanning text for email addresses, up to 63 times faster than traditional CPU processing.

As the company prepares to roll out its solution, it will face the challenge of not only validating its technology through real-world application but also navigating the competitive landscape dominated by established synthesis tools. The coming months will be pivotal as BoolSi demonstrates its value proposition to potential early adopters, eyes further expansion, and refines its toolchain for the anticipated shift towards custom ASIC solutions once their specific workloads are established.
