Scarlet Letter acquires Black Apple Hard Cider
Scarlet Letter, a Springdale-based craft beverage producer, has acquired the intellectual property and brand assets of Black Apple Hard Cider. The financial details of the transaction remain confidential. This acquisition represents a strategic expansion for Scarlet Letter within the craft beverage industry, particularly the growing hard cider segment.
Founded in 2015, Black Apple Hard Cider has developed a notable presence with its diverse range of products, including popular flavors like Hibiscus, Blackberry, and Strawberry. The brand has garnered recognition at prestigious industry competitions, earning accolades such as gold, double gold, and platinum medals. Scarlet Letter intends to leverage its production capacity and distribution network to relaunch Black Apple in various bars, restaurants, and retail outlets in the coming months.
The acquisition aligns with Scarlet Letter's strategy to scale its operations as an Arkansas-based craft beverage company, enhancing production capabilities and expanding its distribution reach. Jesse Core, CEO of Scarlet Letter, emphasized the company's goal to build on Black Apple's established consumer base while utilizing its own production efficiencies and distribution channels to broaden the cider's market presence. According to Core, this synergy is set to propel Black Apple forward without compromising its established brand identity.
The deal follows Black Apple's decision to shutter its downtown Springdale taproom at the end of 2025, with Scarlet Letter opting not to continue this aspect of the business. Instead, the focus is on expanding Black Apple's retail and venue availability. The acquisition also involves the integration of two former Black Apple employees into Scarlet Letter's workforce, including a production cider maker and a director of sales, thus strengthening the company's operational and sales teams.
Looking ahead, Scarlet Letter will produce Black Apple cider through its Springdale plant and other partner facilities as needed to meet anticipated demand. The company aims to significantly boost Black Apple's current annual sales of 2,500 to 3,000 barrels by capitalizing on the expanding U.S. market for hard cider. For Scarlet Letter, which already produces a variety of hard beverages, the acquisition enhances its portfolio and positions it strategically within the competitive craft beverage sector.
