R.P. Lumber acquires Bender Lumber

R.P. Lumber Co., Inc., based in Illinois, has completed the acquisition of Bender Lumber, an established firm in Southern Indiana's building materials sector since 1931. The transaction, finalized on February 13, 2026, represents a strategic expansion for R.P. Lumber while ending the long tenure of the Bender family in the region's hardware retail scene. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bender Lumber has operated eight retail locations—Bedford, Bloomington, Columbus, Linton, Madison, Martinsville, Paoli, and Washington—employing over 100 people across these sites. This acquisition augments R.P. Lumber's footprint to 99 stores spread over seven states: Illinois, Missouri, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and now an increased presence in Indiana, totaling ten locations in the state.

The acquisition underscores R.P. Lumber’s intent to cement its position in the Indiana market, following its acquisition of Dye Lumber's two stores in October 2025. The integration of Bender Lumber will see R.P. Lumber adopting its new assets with a commitment to invest in technological upgrades, equipment enhancement, and expanded inventory to improve service offerings. The company is retaining all existing Bender employees and is committed to maintaining localized operations and community engagement.
