Augmodo, a Seattle-based startup specializing in AI-powered wearable devices for retail employees, has secured $21 million in a Series A funding round led by TQ Ventures. This capital influx raises the company's valuation to $350 million and positions it for expansion beyond its initial focus on grocery stores to include warehouses, factories, and other industrial settings. The funding aims to enable Augmodo to broaden its market footprint and enhance its technological offerings.

Founded in 2023, Augmodo develops "Smartbadges," wearable devices equipped with dual cameras that allow store employees to monitor shelf inventory seamlessly. The technology employs computer vision and spatial computing to create a digital “Realogram” of store interiors, providing real-time updates on inventory status. The recent funding comes at a time when Augmodo's technology is attracting interest from diverse sectors, including automotive manufacturing and healthcare environments, as outlined by co-founder Finman.

Finman highlighted the versatility of the company's algorithms, which can track activities as varied as grabbing an item in a warehouse to selecting products in a retail aisle. This adaptability has led Augmodo to serve sectors it didn't initially target, such as facility maintenance and employee training programs. The Smartbadge has evolved to incorporate additional features like a walkie-talkie system, an emergency button, and digital ID functionalities, which Finman describes as major selling points.

In the competitive landscape of AI and retail technology, Augmodo's traction is reflected in its rapid growth, with revenue increasing tenfold over the past year. The company now tracks over 186 million square feet of retail space monthly and plans to surpass 1 billion square feet by the end of the year. Augmodo's employee base has also expanded significantly, with its headcount increasing fivefold to more than 50 staff members, including the recent addition of a new Chief Technology Officer.

Looking forward, Augmodo plans to allocate the new funds towards expanding its global presence, fortifying its AI capabilities, and scaling its engineering team, particularly in roles focused on computer vision and machine learning. The company's continued growth will depend on navigating potential regulatory considerations as it broadens its application areas and maintains momentum in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
