Armada Inc. raises $230M

Armada Inc., known for its portable data centers and satellite internet software, has secured $230 million in new funding, valuing the company at $2 billion. BlackRock led the investment round, which also included Overmatch and 8090 Industries, among others. A notable investor, Johnson Controls Inc., has inked a manufacturing partnership with Armada as part of the investment terms, highlighting the industrial interest in Armada's solutions.

Armada's product line, particularly its Galleon series of portable data centers, is designed to function in environments traditionally hostile to AI infrastructure. These units range from suitcase-sized models to massive systems providing multiple megawatts of computing capacity, equivalent to the power need of thousands of homes. The units are encased in ruggedized containers, equipped to withstand extreme environments, and include sensors for tamper detection. Johnson Controls will assist Armada in building a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility aimed at producing these modular data centers, with operations set to commence this summer focusing initially on the Leviathan, Armada’s largest system.

Strategically, this funding positions Armada to expand its reach across various industries that demand robust and versatile AI infrastructure solutions, including energy, telecommunications, and defense. Armada's Galleon series is accompanied by several software offerings that enhance their functionality. Such products enable the installation of third-party AI tools and facilitate the commercialization of AI infrastructure through computing resource rentals. Additionally, its Atlas software simplifies the acquisition and management of Starlink satellite internet services using Microsoft Azure credits, expanding its portfolio into the satellite internet arena.

The infusion of capital sharpens Armada’s competitive edge in the rapidly evolving portable data center market, where it addresses the growing need for flexible, resilient computing solutions. In collaboration with Johnson Controls, Armada aims to consolidate its presence in an arena increasingly characterized by demand for agility and resilience in data center deployments. This move further solidifies its standing amid rising competition in the market, where adaptability to diverse operational conditions is critical.

Looking ahead, Armada plans to leverage this growth capital to scale up its manufacturing capabilities and broaden its product offerings, focusing on deployment in demanding terrains and sectors. The new manufacturing facility, expected to start operations by summer, represents a significant milestone. Continued growth in customer bookings, which more than quadrupled last year, underscores Armada’s expanding appeal and positions it to capitalize on future market opportunities.
