Lumen Technologies acquires Alkira
Lumen has entered into an agreement to acquire Alkira, a cloud-native networking platform known for enabling connectivity across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This acquisition advances Lumen's strategy to expand its digital platform by incorporating Alkira’s capabilities, enhancing its ability to offer cloud-like consumption models for global enterprise networking. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Alkira's technology is integrated with major public cloud providers, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, offering users a unified software layer to manage connections across data centers and diverse environments. This acquisition is set to bolster Lumen's offerings in East-West connectivity, focusing on the data transfers between data centers, cloud services, and AI workloads — a rapidly growing segment in enterprise networking. The deal is projected to expand Lumen's addressable market dramatically, from $23 billion to approximately $70 billion, by moving into a higher tier of software-driven enterprise interconnect solutions.
The strategic rationale behind the acquisition is rooted in augmenting Lumen's Network-as-a-Service offerings. By integrating Alkira’s cloud-native control plane with its existing fiber network infrastructure, Lumen aims to provide a more comprehensive service that facilitates multi-cloud integration and eases enterprise access to cloud infrastructures of major tech giants. This move aligns with its goal of becoming a neutral, software-driven control hub within the ecosystem of cloud and enterprise connectivity.
Both Lumen and Alkira cater to enterprise clients across multiple sectors, such as financial services, retail, technology, healthcare, and manufacturing. Alkira’s platform will complement Lumen’s existing network management tools, specifically its Lumen Connect interface that delivers self-service and API-driven access. The consolidated platforms are expected to enhance Lumen’s service range without replacing existing interfaces, thereby maintaining continuity for current users.
Pending regulatory approvals, Lumen and Alkira will continue to operate independently until the acquisition is finalized. During this period, customers will experience no changes in pricing, contract terms, or service levels. The forthcoming consolidation promises to extend Lumen’s influence in the network services domain, though regulatory scrutiny or integration risks remain a consideration as the deal proceeds towards completion.
