Lone Star acquires AGI
Lone Star Funds has finalized the acquisition of Alliance Ground International (AGI), a prominent US-based airport services provider. The purchase, made through Lone Star Fund XII, L.P., represents a strategic expansion for the investment firm by targeting a company that spans more than 60 airports across North America. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
AGI, headquartered in Miami and employing over 12,000 people, was acquired from Greenbriar Equity Group and Audax Private Equity. The company, established in 1987, specializes in air cargo handling, alongside passenger terminal and ground handling services. Jared Azcuy, AGI’s chief executive, described the acquisition as a pivotal step, aiming to enhance the firm’s growth capabilities while maintaining its commitment to safety and reliability.
Lone Star’s acquisition strategy focuses on enhancing AGI’s market position by increasing investments in its operational capabilities and exploring expansion in both new and existing markets. Donald Quintin, Lone Star’s chief executive, emphasized the superior service offering and successful track record of AGI, indicating opportunities for further investment to bolster its status within the aviation industry. AGI’s strategic objectives include broadening its geographic footprint into Europe, Canada, Mexico, and South America, building on its robust base at major cargo airports across the United States.
The airport services sector has experienced considerable dynamics, with the freighter and passenger-to-freighter market segments anticipated to expand significantly. Analyst projections suggest a 41% increase in the global freighter fleet over the next two decades. These developments present AGI with a growth-conducive environment, albeit amid challenges such as fluctuating jet fuel prices and variable air cargo rates.
Looking ahead, the focus will turn to how Lone Star and AGI manage regulatory and operational hurdles in expanding their service lines. The integration of strategies geared towards enhancing AGI’s market presence and operational efficiency will be crucial in determining the success of this acquisition in the highly competitive airport services landscape.
