Valarian Technologies Ltd. raises $50M in Series A
Valarian Technologies Ltd., a defense-focused AI infrastructure startup, has secured $50 million in a Series A funding round. The investment, led by New Enterprise Associates, underscores Valarian's ambitions to establish itself in the sovereign AI market—a sector gaining traction as nations seek to maintain control over critical AI technologies. Participants in the funding include Lightbank, XTX Markets, Sequel, and LitVC, in addition to angel investors Gokul Rajaram and Nikesh Arora.
The surge in European defense spending, which surpassed €392 billion in 2025, highlights the region's focus on AI-driven systems. However, concerns are mounting over reliance on dominant U.S.-based technology providers that hold sway over crucial AI infrastructure. Valarian aims to address these concerns by offering a foundational infrastructure layer for AI-powered environments. Co-founded by Max Buchan, a former finance operator, and Josh McLaughlin, an ex-Palantir executive and U.S. Army officer, Valarian's offerings promise sovereign-level governance over sensitive computing domains.
Valarian's platform, ACRA, enables absolute control over AI systems, ensuring data and operations can be fully isolated even in public cloud settings. The company touts this control as critical for government agencies and corporations dealing in sensitive environments. Valarian Enterprise targets commercial users, while Valarian Defense caters to military and defense agencies demanding uncompromised security.
The funding round arrives at a time when the UK government is prioritizing domestic AI capabilities as a strategic need. Kanishka Narayan, the UK Minister for AI and Online Safety, emphasized the importance of building domestic AI capabilities to bolster national security and sovereignty. Valarian's dual-target approach has aligned well with these geopolitical shifts, positioning it as a valuable player in sovereign AI infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Valarian's success will hinge on its ability to scale its operations and persuade defense and commercial sectors to adopt its systems amidst regulatory complexities and competitive pressures. The completion of this funding round provides Valarian with the necessary capital to expand its offerings to meet the surging demand for sovereign AI solutions.
