Axel Springer acquires The Telegraph

This move places Axel Springer against DMGT, the publisher of the Daily Mail, which is also negotiating for ownership of The Telegraph. The new consortium led by Axel Springer, in which Dovid Efune, owner of the New York Sun, plays a significant role, is offering the same £500 million that DMGT is prepared to pay. Other potential backers of the consortium reportedly include David Smith, owner of the Baltimore Sun, and hedge fund manager Jeremy Hosking. Approval from the UK government is necessary for the sale, especially after Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy previously extended an intervention notice citing public interest concerns over DMGT's £500 million proposal. Regulatory bodies Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority are due to report on this by June 10.
