Williamston Primary School merges with South Creek Middle School

The Martin County Board of Education is contemplating a merger between South Creek Middle School and Riverside Middle School, a proposal driven by declining student enrollment and financial constraints. This initiative seeks to consolidate educational resources and provide equitable opportunities across the district, as the board grapples with dwindling state funding.

The merger would involve the relocation of South Creek students to the Riverside campus, located in Williamston, beginning in the fall semester of 2026. The financial aspects underpinning the merger include a $1 million investment aimed at enhancing sustainability. South Creek Middle, currently operating at only a fraction of its capacity, has just 136 students in a facility meant for 960. In contrast, Riverside Middle offers newer amenities, having been built in 2012, which could be more cost-effective to maintain in the long term compared to the older South Creek building, erected in 1975.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle White emphasized that the merger intends to ensure all students receive equal opportunities, a challenge made more pressing by an anticipated reduction in state funding. This move follows a previous consolidation involving South Creek High School and Martin County High School in 2024, driven by similar objectives. Parents like Teresa Swanson have expressed hope that the shift to Riverside will enhance extracurricular offerings for students, albeit concerns remain over lengthened travel times, a logistical hurdle acknowledged during a public hearing.
