Pangram Labs Inc. raises $9M
Pangram Labs Inc., an artificial intelligence research company, has secured $9 million in funding led by Menlo Ventures to enhance the accuracy of its AI detection software for text and images. The funding round also saw participation from Haystack, ScOp Venture Capital, Script Capital, and Cadenza. This financial injection brings the total funding raised by Pangram Labs to nearly $13 million, following a $2.7 million round in June 2025.
The company intends to use the fresh capital to advance its text detection capabilities and foray into detecting AI-generated images. Pangram is recognized for its AI detection platform, which the company claims can achieve a notable false positive rate of approximately once in 24,000 documents. CEO Max Spero emphasized the growing prevalence of undisclosed AI-generated content and outlined Pangram's mission to ensure authorship transparency for various stakeholders, including publishers and educators.
Pangram's core technology involves a "classifier model," a neural network designed to differentiate between AI-generated and human-written text. The model, initially trained using pre-2021 human text alongside AI-generated samples, requires ongoing updates to adapt to evolving language uses. The company's latest offering, Pangram Image, aims to detect AI-created images, addressing increasing concerns about the proliferation of deepfakes and AI-modified imagery. Pangram's detection system can identify images from prominent AI image providers, including OpenAI and Google.
This funding round comes amidst a burgeoning demand for AI detection solutions, driven by challenges such as the escalating spread of deepfakes and AI content perceived as genuine. While some companies are embedding watermarks to distinguish AI content, these methods are limited to newer models that support such features. Pangram aims to differentiate itself through higher detection accuracy, although AI detection tools as a whole remain fraught with reliability issues and potential biases, often producing false positives, according to industry critiques.
The funding positions Pangram to solidify its place in the AI detection market, a landscape marked by rapid technological changes and increasing regulatory scrutiny. Future challenges will include continually updating the company's AI models to maintain detection efficacy and addressing any emerging regulatory requirements as governments and organizations reassess AI content oversight.
