National Fuel Gas acquires North East Heat & Light Co.

National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation has finalized the acquisition of North East Heat & Light Co. (NEHL), expanding its footprint in northwestern Pennsylvania. The transaction, which has been sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, enables National Fuel to take over the operations and maintenance of NEHL’s natural gas system in Erie County.

The acquisition marks a strategic expansion for National Fuel, which serves approximately 2.1 million consumers in Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania. Although financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, the primary focus appears to be enhancing service reliability and cost efficiency for former NEHL customers. These customers will be transitioned to National Fuel’s natural gas supply cost rate, known for leveraging the company’s larger scale to potentially offer lower average supply costs.

According to Michael Colpoys, President of National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation, the acquisition aligns with the company's ongoing commitment to provide reliable energy solutions to communities in the region. The transaction also concludes the tenure of Sam Miller, who owned and operated NEHL for decades and sold the utility as part of his retirement plans.
