Rio Tinto acquires Nemaska Lithium
Rio Tinto has taken a controlling interest in Nemaska Lithium by increasing its stake to 53.9%, up from a previously acquired 50%. This development entitles Rio Tinto to assume direct management of Nemaska Lithium, positioning it strategically to meet the growing demand for lithium in North America and Europe. The Government of Québec retains a 46.1% interest through Investissement Québec.
The transaction encompasses Nemaska Lithium's key assets, which include the Whabouchi spodumene mine situated in Québec's Eeyou Istchee James Bay region and a lithium hydroxide processing plant in Bécancour. These facilities form a vertically integrated operation that aligns with Rio Tinto's business expansion plans in the lithium sector. While the financial specifics of the additional acquisition were not disclosed, Rio Tinto has committed over $300 million for further development activities in 2026, complemented by a pledged investment of up to $200 million from the Government of Québec.
From a strategic perspective, the acquisition solidifies Rio Tinto's foothold in the lithium market, a critical component for electric vehicle batteries and other clean energy technologies. Rio Tinto Aluminium & Lithium Chief Executive Jérôme Pécresse remarked that Nemaska Lithium is pivotal to advancing Rio Tinto's lithium ambitions and expanding its product offerings. By leveraging its resources and expertise, Rio Tinto intends to bolster Nemaska Lithium's long-term growth and operational capacity.
This move occurs amid a backdrop of cooling corporate M&A activity in the energy storage sector, as noted by a decline in company acquisitions from 25 in 2024 to 22 in 2025. However, Rio Tinto's investment signals continued interest and confidence in lithium's market potential, contrasting with the broader sector trend.
In forthcoming steps, Rio Tinto will integrate Nemaska Lithium into its operational framework and optimize the asset's production capabilities. As this transaction further develops, observers will watch how the business adapts its operations to maximize efficiency and meet market demands, particularly given the regulatory environment and supply chain considerations for critical minerals like lithium.
