Monumental BV, a Dutch company specializing in construction robotics, has secured $35 million in a Series B funding round led by Khosla Ventures. The investment also saw participation from existing backers Plural and Hummingbird. This capital injection underscores growing interest in automation technology within the construction sector, particularly for companies like Monumental that deploy bricklaying robots to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

Monumental operates robots such as Petra and Panama, which deliver bricks and mortar to construction sites, while their Pisa robot executes the bricklaying. This system is orchestrated by Monumental’s Atrium platform, which generates blueprints and monitors for construction errors. The investment will facilitate expanding Monumental's engineering team, extending international operations, and increasing the range of automated construction tasks.

According to Monumental's CEO, Salar al Khafaji, every robot deployed enhances the capacity to produce customized and economically viable structures. The Atrium software aids in blueprint accuracy by using photogrammetry to create three-dimensional site replicas, thus minimizing construction errors. Moreover, the software’s custom language, Plan, allows engineers to streamline robotic operations and improve precision.

The move comes at a time when the construction industry is increasingly embracing technology to mitigate labor shortages and improve operational efficiency. Monumental’s automated service, which supports outcome-based pricing, offers a competitive edge by eliminating the upfront costs of purchasing heavy machinery. With a track record of assisting in the construction of over 100 structures, Monumental is distinctively positioned within the robotics realm of the construction industry.

The company plans to leverage this funding to explore further international market opportunities and broaden the applicability of its robots in construction. As regulatory dynamics evolve in different jurisdictions concerning robotics in construction, Monumental’s future expansion and service offerings may pivot to meet new standards and demands.
