Sporting Kansas City acquires Malmö FF

Sporting Kansas City has reinforced its midfield lineup with the acquisition of Lasse Berg Johnsen from Malmö FF. The player, a 26-year-old Norway international, has been contracted through the 2027-28 season, with an option for the 2028-29 season, according to an announcement made by the Major League Soccer club. Sporting KC sees this acquisition as a strategic addition ahead of their 2026 campaign.

Berg Johnsen arrives in Kansas City with a commendable track record from his tenure in the Scandinavian leagues. Over his career, he has notched 18 goals and 21 assists in 258 appearances, accumulating experience across Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. His stint at Malmö FF was marked by three title wins, further embellished by additional successes with Danish club Randers FC and Norwegian side Viking FK.

David Lee, Sporting KC's president of soccer operations and general manager, emphasized Berg Johnsen's skilled possession play and competitiveness, which align with the club's strategic goals. Lee noted that the midfielder’s qualities, both on and off the field, fit well with the profile KC aims to nurture as they prepare for their upcoming season starting February 21, 2026.
