Sporting Kansas City acquires Malmö FF

Sporting Kansas City has completed the acquisition of midfielder Lasse Berg Johnsen from Malmö FF. The 26-year-old Norwegian has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club, extending through the 2027-2028 season with an option for an additional year. Berg Johnsen's transfer, undisclosed in terms of financials, marks a strategic addition to Sporting Kansas City's roster, which he will join as an international player, contingent upon securing a P1 visa and International Transfer Certificate.

Berg Johnsen has made 258 career appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing 21 assists across various clubs in Scandinavia, including Norway, Denmark, and most recently Sweden. His career began at Viking FK in Norway, followed by a loan to Tromsdalen and a subsequent move to Raufoss. He gained prominence with his transfer to Randers FC in Denmark, where he contributed to a Danish Cup victory and participated in UEFA tournaments.

In the 2023 summer transfer window, Berg Johnsen joined Malmö FF, where he played a pivotal role in the team's Allsvenskan title win that year. The following season saw him further solidify his status with Malmö, achieving a league and cup double and setting personal records with three goals and eight assists in 34 appearances. During 2025, his leadership qualities were recognized as he captained the team on several occasions and he achieved career-high statistics of seven goals and four assists in 43 matches.

Sporting Kansas City views Berg Johnsen as an asset entering the prime of his career. David Lee, Sporting KC's President of Soccer Operations & General Manager, emphasized that Berg Johnsen’s proficiency in possession and winning mentality aligns with the club’s strategic needs. His signing strengthens their squad as they gear up for the 2026 MLS season, beginning with a match against the San Jose Earthquakes, followed by a home opener versus the Columbus Crew.
