SoundHound acquires LivePerson
SoundHound AI has announced the acquisition of LivePerson, a move intended to bolster its presence in the conversational AI sector. The transaction, valued at $43 million, is part of SoundHound's broader strategy to expand its capabilities in voice recognition and AI-powered solutions. However, the acquisition failed to impress investors, as evidenced by an 11% drop in the company's share price after hours. The lack of an update to SoundHound's full-year revenue guidance left investors wanting more, despite positive growth figures.
In the first quarter, SoundHound reported revenue of $44.2 million, representing a 52% increase year-over-year. However, this figure marks a nearly 20% sequential decrease from the previous quarter's revenue of $55.1 million. Despite this decline, the company surpassed analysts' expectations, which had been set at $42.6 million. Additionally, SoundHound posted a net loss of $0.06 per share, outperforming the anticipated loss of $0.10 per share. The company maintained its revenue outlook for 2026, projecting figures to remain between $225 million and $260 million.
The acquisition of LivePerson is expected to play a critical role in SoundHound's growth trajectory, with predictions of driving annual revenue to between $350 million and $400 million by 2027. At least $100 million of this will be sourced from LivePerson’s existing customer relationships. CEO Keyvan Mohajer underscored the strength in SoundHound's core automotive and IoT AI verticals, with revenue up 88% excluding acquisition impacts. These sectors exhibit strong demand, a factor the company is banking on to achieve its strategic goals.
SoundHound is also advancing its offerings through the development of Oasys, a self-learning AI platform designed to operate independently from major tech ecosystems like Microsoft, Google, or Amazon. This model-agnostic platform aims to provide flexibility in rapidly evolving AI landscapes. Mohajer stressed the importance of this adaptability, suggesting that reliance on a single provider could hinder innovation.
Market analysts continue to hold an optimistic view of SoundHound's long-term potential, with eight analysts rating the stock a Strong Buy and a consensus price target offering significant upside. However, the unchanged revenue guidance has raised questions about the immediate impact of recent strategic decisions, including the LivePerson acquisition. As SoundHound integrates LivePerson and further develops its Oasys platform, its ability to meet and possibly exceed future revenue expectations will remain under scrutiny.
