The LEGO Group has acquired the LEGO Discovery Centres and LEGOLAND Discovery Centres from Merlin Entertainments for £200 million, an equivalent of approximately $254 million. This strategic acquisition encompasses 29 locations across nine countries, attracting around five million visitors annually. This move is aimed at strengthening LEGO’s direct engagement with consumers and expanding its entertainment footprint.

The acquisition aligns with LEGO's strategy to enhance customer interaction and brand presence. CEO Niels B Christiansen emphasized the significance of this deal in connecting with more LEGO enthusiasts globally. The Centres will integrate more than 1,500 employees into the LEGO team, allowing the company to maintain and potentially expand the experiential offerings that have been executed by Merlin over the years. The Centres have played an instrumental role in engaging families and younger audiences through interactive and playful environments.

From Merlin Entertainments’ perspective, the transaction allows it to realign its focus on operating LEGOLAND Resorts under a long-term licensing agreement with LEGO, including recent expansions like the LEGOLAND Shanghai location. According to Merlin CEO Fiona Eastwood, this move reinforces their commitment to delivering large-scale LEGOLAND experiences, while maintaining a collaborative relationship with LEGO to continue bringing the brand to life for families worldwide.

This acquisition highlights LEGO's commitment to the entertainment sector, positioning it to better compete with other major players offering experiential consumer interactions. By having direct control over these Centres, LEGO can more seamlessly integrate branding and product marketing with live experiences, a tactic that extends beyond traditional consumer product strategies in the toy industry.

Moving forward, the acquisition is expected to fortify LEGO's operational capacity in key markets, although it remains to be seen how the company will differentiate these Centres under its banner. Potentially, LEGO could introduce new content and experiences, driving increased footfall and engagement. With established brands such as LEGOLAND Resorts continuing under Merlin's management, LEGO will need to balance innovation with brand consistency across its entertainment venues.
