Primary Wave acquires Hipgnosis

Primary Wave has acquired the interests of Aubrey Powell in Hipgnosis, a design group renowned for shaping the visual identity of major rock albums in the 1970s. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Primary Wave, a music publishing company, plans to utilize Hipgnosis' extensive catalog in global exhibitions. The catalog includes iconic artworks from bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Genesis, among others. However, the acquisition specifically excludes the artwork of famous album covers for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Lexi Todd, Deputy COO of Primary Wave, emphasized the cultural significance of Hipgnosis' work, stating that the design group’s art has greatly influenced how audiences interact with music. The intention is to preserve and promote this influence through curated exhibitions that will feature both recognized pieces and previously unseen artworks. By partnering with Hipgnosis, Primary Wave aims to maintain the legacy of these visual accompaniments to some of rock's most influential sounds.

Aubrey Powell, co-founder of Hipgnosis, expressed his satisfaction with the deal, noting that Primary Wave offers the necessary institutional backing to elevate Hipgnosis’ reach. Powell indicated a desire for a comprehensive approach to his catalog, contrasting with previous proposals to sell isolated pieces.
