Portland Timbers acquires Grêmio
The Portland Timbers have secured forward Alexander Aravena on loan from Brazil's Grêmio, underscoring the team's intent to strengthen its attacking options. The California-based Major League Soccer club announced the acquisition will span until 2026 and includes an option to purchase, marking a strategic addition as they aim to boost their playoff credentials.
Chilean international Aravena, 23, has delivered seven goals and three assists over 57 appearances for Grêmio since joining the Brazilian side in 2024. His versatility is a key asset, enabling him to function effectively across multiple forward positions. Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy emphasized Aravena's potential to enhance the team's offensive depth, noting, "He provides us another quality option as we look to build out our attack this season."
Phil Neville, the Timbers' head coach, offered similar praise, pointing to Aravena's technical proficiency and adaptability. "He’s a technical player who’s comfortable operating in the pockets and even in the No. 10 role," Neville stated, adding that Aravena's experience in top-tier leagues makes him a valuable addition to the squad as they target sustained success in the MLS.
The Timbers' move to augment their roster reflects broader trends in MLS, where clubs continue to leverage international talent to drive competitiveness. Rival teams such as DC United and Colorado Rapids have also recently bolstered their line-ups, showcasing an increasingly dynamic transfer market within the league. The Timbers, under Neville's third season of leadership, are pushing to maintain their momentum following consecutive playoff appearances in the previous two seasons.
As Portland integrates Aravena into their squad, attention will turn to his assimilation into the MLS playing style and his contributions during the upcoming season. The loan agreement includes a purchase option, affording the Timbers potential longer-term strategic flexibility depending on Aravena’s performance over the next three years.
