Amazon acquires Globalstar
Amazon.com Inc. is set to advance its ambitions in the satellite communications sector by acquiring Globalstar Inc. for $11.6 billion. As part of this transaction, Amazon will take over Apple Inc.'s 20% equity stake in the satellite firm, shifting the competitive dynamics in the expanding market for satellite-enabled connectivity.
According to a Federal Communications Commission filing, Amazon plans to execute this acquisition through a newly created subsidiary, Grapefruit Acquisition Sub II, LLC. This entity will specifically acquire Apple's 20% equity and voting interests in Globalstar Licensee LLC. Apple initially purchased this stake through a $1.1 billion deal in 2024, which included a $400 million share purchase. Upon completion, Apple will cease to hold these shares or any associated voting rights in Globalstar.
The acquisition positions Amazon to enhance its capabilities and presence in the satellite communications arena, notably competing against SpaceX Corp's projects and AST SpaceMobile Inc. Globalstar has been integral in powering vital satellite features on Apple devices, such as emergency services on iPhones. Despite the ownership transition, Amazon has assured continued cooperation with Apple to support these features, ensuring no service disruption for existing users.
Amazon emphasized in its filing that investing in constellation expansion and technical improvements will address previous signal strength issues, notably those impeded by adverse weather conditions and obstacles like buildings and foliage. These advancements, combined with enhanced voice capabilities, aim to broaden the scope of satellite connectivity for consumers and businesses globally, thus aligning with Amazon's strategic long-term goals in this domain.
Moving forward, the successful closing of this deal will depend on regulatory approvals and the finalization of the transactional steps outlined in the FCC filing. The acquisition could further intensify competition within the satellite communications landscape, prompting other major players to reassess their strategic approaches as they vie for market share in the burgeoning space-based connectivity sector.
