Sporting Kansas City acquires FC Tulsa

Sporting Kansas City has finalized the transfer of forward Taylor Calheira from FC Tulsa in the USL Championship, as announced by the club. Calheira, 23, arrives with a promising attacking record and has signed a contract extending through the 2027-2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with options to extend through 2029-2030. The transaction also involved acquiring his Discovery Priority rights from Minnesota United in exchange for $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM), with an additional $25,000 contingent on performance metrics.

Calheira joins Sporting KC following an impressive season at FC Tulsa where he scored 21 goals and provided four assists, aiding the team to finish at the top of the Western Conference. He was also instrumental in the club’s journey to the USL Championship Final. His performance earned him a spot on the 2025 USL Championship All-League First Team, thanks to a league-leading +11.11 Goals Added metric, underscoring his substantial contributions in all phases of the game.

David Lee, Sporting KC's President of Soccer Operations and General Manager, underscored Calheira's ability to score goals consistently across various competitive levels, noting his technical skill and work rate. Calheira's career began at NYCFC II, where he notched up 17 goals and six assists in his debut professional season, also capturing attention by earning MLS NEXT Pro Best XI honors.

This acquisition fortifies Sporting KC's attacking options as the team prepares to start the MLS season with a match against the San Jose Earthquakes.
