bp has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Eco Atlantic Oil & Gas's offshore exploration blocks in Namibia. The oil major will take a 60% interest in three exploration licenses located in the Walvis basin, positioning it as the operator. This acquisition aligns with bp’s strategic focus on expanding its presence in emerging offshore frontiers.

The transaction involves the Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PEL) 97, 99, and 100. Eco Atlantic will retain a 25% interest in these areas post-completion but will relinquish operatorship to bp. As part of the agreement, bp is set to carry Eco’s stake through the ongoing exploration phase, which includes plans for comprehensive seismic assessments and data acquisition over a 3,000 sq km area. Eco is afforded the option to either contribute financially to future drilling phases or further dilute its share, should subsequent exploration phases proceed.

For Eco Atlantic, this deal aids its strategy of leveraging partnerships with larger entities to propel exploration activities while diminishing capital expenditure risks. The Walvis basin, part of the broader Namibian offshore regions, has started drawing substantial industry attention following notable hydrocarbon discoveries, underscoring the potential of this basin.

For bp, this acquisition provides an opportunity to quickly expand its footprint in a promising frontier region purported to hold significant untapped reserves. Expeditiously evaluating and confirming the exploratory prospects of these licenses will be critical as competition in the Southern African offshore sector intensifies.

The completion of this transaction hinges on securing necessary approvals from Namibian regulatory authorities. Should these be obtained, bp's advancement into the Namibian offshore scene will likely influence the pace of exploration in the wider Walvis basin, potentially altering the competitive dynamics of the region's oil and gas exploration landscape.
