SAP acquires Dremio
SAP SE has acquired Dremio Inc. and Prior Labs GmbH, two startups specializing in tabular data analysis, to bolster its capabilities in artificial intelligence applications. The terms of the transactions were not disclosed. This acquisition is part of SAP's broader strategy to enhance its Business Data Cloud service, a key offering for organizations seeking to consolidate datasets for AI model deployment.
Dremio, based in Santa Clara, California, has previously secured over $300 million in funding. Its data management platform, leveraging open-source technologies Apache Iceberg and Apache Polaris, simplifies the handling of large datasets. Features such as schema modification and metadata management are integrated, aiding in efficient data operations without requiring extensive SQL coding. These capabilities are expected to enhance SAP’s data cloud services, particularly by improving Iceberg support and metadata management.
SAP's decision to acquire Dremio stems from its core technology, which addresses common hurdles in enterprise AI applications by making data AI-ready, as noted by SAP CTO Philipp Herzig. Meanwhile, Prior Labs, the Berlin-based company, has developed the TabPFN-2.5 AI model for processing spreadsheet data. SAP will incorporate this technology across its product range, with Prior Labs continuing its research independently, powered by more than $1.17 billion in investment from SAP over the coming years.
The acquisition positions SAP strategically within the data management sector. As companies increasingly seek to leverage AI, the ability to efficiently manage and analyze tabular data is becoming a competitive advantage. By integrating Dremio and Prior Labs' innovations, SAP strengthens its data cloud offerings, potentially increasing its appeal against competitors like Oracle and IBM, which are also expanding their data handling capabilities.
Looking forward, SAP's integration of these technologies will be keenly observed for impact on their existing product suite and market positioning. The focus will be on how efficiently SAP can merge the startups' functionalities into its broader ecosystem, potentially setting new standards in AI-ready data management solutions in the enterprise market.
