Amcor merges with Berry Global Group
Amcor Rigid Packaging has merged with Berry Global in an $8.4 billion transaction aimed at streamlining operations and leveraging synergies to strengthen its market position. The completion of this merger was confirmed in April 2025, marking a significant consolidation in the packaging sector.
The merger brings together Amcor, with its substantial global footprint operating over 400 facilities and employing approximately 75,000 people worldwide, and Berry Global, another significant player in packaging. The newly combined entity intends to achieve operational efficiencies and a stronger competitive stance in the market. Amcor foresees realizing about $650 million in synergies over the first three years post-merger. Already, $77 million in synergies have been reported for the quarter preceding the merger.
Strategically, the deal is centered around optimizing the operations of both companies. Amcor intends to utilize this merger to integrate production facilities and streamline supply chains. The consolidation move includes significant restructuring efforts, such as the closure of a former Berry Global facility in Lanett, Alabama, affecting 112 workers, and expected layoffs of 56 jobs in Fort Worth, Texas, as disclosed in filings with the respective state workforce agencies.
This merger reflects a trend in the packaging industry towards consolidation as companies seek to enhance their economies of scale and operational efficiencies. Both firms are making moves to realign their operations in response to evolving market conditions, which also involved reshaping their geographical operational footprints. These developments come amid broader industry challenges, including raw material cost fluctuations and geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains, as noted in a third-quarter earnings report.
Moving forward, Amcor plans to establish a new U.S. headquarters in Miami by 2027, continuing to maintain portions of its corporate presence in Switzerland and Australia. The integration of operations from the merger will be crucial to capitalize on these synergies and position the combined entity for future growth amidst a competitive industry landscape.
