SpaceX acquires Anthropic

SpaceX has acquired Anthropic, an artificial intelligence research firm, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition grants Anthropic access to SpaceX's xAI Colossus 1 data center, significantly enhancing its computational capabilities. This transaction allows Anthropic to double the rate limits for users of its Claude Code product and loosen other restrictions, improving performance immediately for its paying customer base.

Under the arrangement, Anthropic will utilize the full computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility. This data center is poised to expand its operational capacity by over 300 megawatts soon. Anthropic will also collaborate with SpaceX to explore the development of gigawatt-level orbital AI compute capacity, a move that indicates potential future collaboration on advanced space-based AI projects. These expanded capabilities are set to benefit users of the Claude Code, particularly those on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, by removing peak hour limitations and considerably raising API rate limits for its Opus models.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has historically criticized Anthropic and its CEO, Dario Amodei. However, Musk recently expressed admiration for the Anthropic team’s dedication to ethical AI development. Despite this softening stance, Musk has reserved the right to reclaim compute resources if Anthropic develops AI technologies that could potentially harm humanity, highlighting ongoing reservations about AI's impact.

This acquisition positions SpaceX more prominently in the artificial intelligence sector, potentially challenging other tech giants investing heavily in AI development. With enhanced access to AI resources, SpaceX may influence competitive dynamics by integrating AI capabilities with its existing aerospace and satellite operations.
